On this Sunday SoulDay, I wanted to share a deeply insightful conversation on Sunday SoulDay podcast, I had the honor of speaking with Wael Saeed, a certified Mental Health, Mindset, and Resilience Coach whose journey serves as a powerful source of inspiration. Wael's story is a testament to resilience, self-discovery, and the strength found in a deep connection to a higher power. His unwavering belief that light can be found even in the darkest moments offers valuable lessons not only for our own lives but also for the lives of those we lead and serve.
Wael's Story: From Suicidal Thoughts to Mental Health Coach
Wael's story begins with a harrowing chapter - one marked by a decade-long battle with depression and suicidal thoughts. He recounts a pivotal moment on November 25, 2013, when he found himself preparing to end his life. However, in a profound moment of clarity, Wael realized that while his life had lost meaning, his soul was a gift from God that he could not bear to extinguish.
This realization set Wael on a transformative journey of self-exploration and healing. He delved deep within, determined to uncover the root causes of his depression. Through introspection, Wael identified two key factors: his tendency to be a people-pleaser and the lack of purpose or meaning in his life.
After enrolling in the Jay Shetty Certification School, Wael discovered his purpose in coaching dedicating his life to serving others. His mission is to guide individuals in training their minds to see the bright side even during the darkest times, empowering them to transform their lives, increase mental and emotional well-being and uncover their true meaning and purpose.
Reflection: As leaders, how often do we take the time to reflect on the root causes of feelings like depression or being lost, especially when it comes to people-pleasing and a lack of purpose? How can we create space for self-exploration while balancing leadership responsibilities?
Embracing the Duality of Life
Wael's journey to wellness was not without its challenges, but he learned to embrace the duality of life - the light and the shadow, the joy and the pain. He recognized that true growth and understanding come from navigating both the positive and negative aspects of the human experience.
Wael's profound insights shed light on the importance of accepting and learning from our struggles, rather than simply trying to avoid them. He believes that depression is not a mental illness, but rather a messenger - a reflection of unmet needs that we must address to find true healing and purpose.
The Power of Visualization and Meditation
Wael's toolkit for managing his depression included powerful practices such as prayer, visualization and meditation. He would often travel back in time, mentally sitting with his younger self and offering words of encouragement and guidance. This practice allowed him to heal the wounds of the past and embrace the growth he had achieved.
Additionally, Wael found solace in prayer and deep connection with the divine. He believes that by cultivating a strong spiritual foundation, he was able to navigate the challenges of his journey with greater clarity and resilience.
Reflection: How do you as a leader fuel your mind, body and soul?
Embracing the Gift of Depression
Wael's perspective on depression is truly remarkable. He views it not as a burden, but as a gift - a catalyst for personal growth and a deeper understanding of the human experience. By shifting his mindset, Wael was able to transform his pain into purpose, eventually becoming a mental health coach dedicated to helping others on their own journeys of self-discovery.
"Depression, it was a blessing for me. It was a blessing for me that helped me a lot to be mentally strong, emotionally strong, and also spiritually strong." - Wael Saeed
Wael's commitment to serving others is a testament to the power of turning one's wounds into wisdom. He understands that the path to healing is not linear, but rather a constant process of unbecoming and rediscovering oneself.
Conclusion
Wael's story serves as a powerful reminder that even in our darkest times, light is always within reach. By embracing life’s dualities, building a strong spiritual foundation, and transforming our pain into purpose, we can emerge from the shadows stronger, wiser, and more aligned with our true selves.
His journey teaches us that our struggles aren’t setbacks but opportunities for growth, self-discovery, and unlocking our full potential to tap into our purpose.
